Text Box: “Avoid eye contact with Miss, sit at the back of the room, and don’t draw attention to yourself by talking too much”. This was my strategy to avoid giving my teachers reason to write in my school reports, “Needs to try harder”. I didn’t know I had dyslexia, and neither did my teachers.

“My File Life” is the story of my struggle to make sure my children and people with dyslexia all over Cyprus can enjoy what is their birthright: an education.

I grew up a Turkish Cypriot in the East End of London, where my childhood was profoundly affected by unrecognized dyslexia. When my own children experienced similar difficulties at school in England and then northern Cyprus, I was determined to provide them with the support and resources that had been unavailable to me. My struggle led to a lifetime commitment, along the way helping bridge the divide afflicting Cyprus with courage and determination.

In my book, I recount the hardships and joys of my life, my family and my work, moving between British, Turkish and Greek Cypriot cultures. I also include an account of how I have dealt with being diagnosed with cancer.
